In the thirteenth century Nicholas de Ludlowe, a
Shrewsbury wool merchant, established a dynasty which was to play a
significant role in the history of Shropshire for the next two hundred
and fifty years. This book recounts the story of the family – of
Laurence, who built Stokesay Castle, of Sir William, who by marriage
acquired Hodnet Castle, of the raffish Sir Laurence, who founded the
Carmelite Friary at Ludlow, and of others who played their part as
sheriffs and Members of Parliament in the administration of
Shropshire, until the male line ran out in 1498. |
